Abstract

The subject of the study is the permanent population in the regions of the Russian Federation from 2001 to 2024. The topic of the research was population reproduction in these regions during this period, its results, and main factors influencing it. One of the objectives of the study was to identify groups of territories with similar patterns of reproduction and overall population movement during the specified period. Another objective was to determine the main factors that differentiate these patterns. Research methods included demographic statistical analysis, and data from Rosstat was used as a source for calculations. As a result, all regions were divided into two groups: those with typical patterns and those with atypical ones. The latter included the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Tyumen, and several republics in the North Caucasus, as well as Siberia. The remaining regions were considered typical. Differences between the groups were found in terms of natural increase, migration, and census changes. Differences between typical regions were also found in terms of relative decline and compensation by migration. Factors that influenced these differences included religion, terrain, age and gender structure, economic development, climate, and age and gender composition. Overall, the main conclusion was that economic development plays a significant role in determining demographic trends in Russian regions. It was also noted that more economically developed regions tend to have worse natural population growth, but better overall population growth when other factors are considered.
